Thrissur Pooram- An overview
Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of the
Kingdom of Cochin, was the mastermind behind the cultural heritage festival of
Thrissur, the Thrissur Pooram. It is a traditional Hindu temple festival known
for its alluring celebrations. 200 years ago, Sakthan Thampuran flagged of the
festival with the inspiration from a sad event. Centuries ago, the goddesses
from Thrissur’s outskirts was moving in group to participate in “Arattupuzha Devamela”
Kerala’s biggest pooram then. But their journey was interrupted with heavy
shower and lightening. Since those goddesses’ failed present in the desired
time, their Poorams were ostracized form Arattupuzha Pooram. This incident disturbed
Sakthan Thampuran and he declared that within one month, in the next Pooram day
he will conduct a fabulous festival infront of Thrissur’s Vadakkumnathan Temple.
Later, with it’s eye captivating events, and people’s participation, Pooram
received worldwide acceptance. Every year lakhs of people from the nook and
corner of the world gather in Thrissur to witness the mind blowing rituals and events
of pooram. It’s display of fireworks, “Kudamattam” and caparisons are always an
eye feast for the Pooram lovers.
